Winter is by far my favorite season. I love snow and the cold temperatures bring a feeling of coziness and comfort. There is nothing better than drinking a hot cup of coffee (NOT tea, never tea) after a day in the snow. From holiday gatherings to winter sports, there are so many fun activities to do during the winter season. I look forward to winter and snow each year. I think there is something so satisfying being comfortable in the uncomfortable…
So, where to best spend New Years Eve, if not in Winter Wonderland? I’ve always wanted to visit Scandinavia, and everything I’ve seen during this trip from Sweden and Finland made me want to go back to explore more.
First stop: Stockholm, Sweden
Second stop: Helsinki, Finnland
Third stop: Rovaniemi, Finnland
Rovaniemi was a DREAM. There was so much snow everywhere, and on our second day, we got to see the Aurora Borealis! I was not prepared for how bright and green the sky gets during this spectacle. It is way more dynamic than I thought. Since I didn’t bring a tripod, I took my pictures handheld - which is obvious. It was hard to get decently sharp pictures, because the shutter speed was quite low. I missed focus a lot, so I guess I have to go back one day to try and shoot the northern lights again… shame.
Fourth stop: Tampere and Turku, Finnland
Fifth stop: Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen was my favorite of all cities we’ve visited. It is very lively, and it seems like everybody is outside either running, cycling, or swimming (yes, in January - they’re crazy). The architecture is beautiful and the city has an absolutely charming vibe. One of my highlights: delicious waffles on a stick :)
