Living in (and trying to escape from) Boston 🌄
If somebody would have told me that I would be living in Boston for more than one year, I would have called them insane. Admittedly, when I arrived here, I was hyped. Living across the Atlantic, in a ‘big city’, sounded exciting. Boston is often called the ‘most European city in the US’ and described as ‘walkable’. However, the excitement quickly disappeared. I was getting frustrated with the lifestyle in the US and this is something that is unlikely to change. Why did I decide to live here anyways? My decision was science-based. I was so hooked by the projects and the scientific environment here at Harvard, that I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to stay here 🫣
So, what can you do to enjoy living in Boston? I grew up between forests and mountains, so living in a city where you never escape the sound of cars or planes is a hit to my mental health. And I know that Boston is nothing compared to many other US cities. Luckily, it is possible to escape the rush relatively easy, since both the White Mountains and Cape Cod are not too far away. Both are excellent places if you want to spend time in nature, though not sufficient if you want to escape the crowds. It seems like all of Boston wants to escape the city during the weekend, so you’ll likely never have the place for yourself. Nevertheless, it is pure bliss to get out of the hectic city. Both Vermont and New Hampshire have nice views to offer, and the sunsets at Cape Cod were some of the nicest I’ve seen to date.

I recently added a new section in my Travel Diary Chapter, where I uploaded some of my favorite places in or around Boston. Have a look and let me know if there are more places you should visit when living in Boston!
